A thread about Rants, Raves and Pet Peeves.

TV commercials. Lately I've been seeing more and more commercials in spanish, I live in the United States of America not in any spanish speaking country. And another commercial I can't stand is where a woman is in her Dr.'s office and he walks in and tells her she has cancer and walks out. I don't think so the Dr. wouldn't be in practice for very long.

I'll ask dris to see if we can entitle something but this site is run on his generosity (his servers and line and no revenue) so that may take a little bit of time.

As to Spanish commercials? who cares? TV stations/networks are private companies and they can accept (and get paid for) any kinds advertising. Ditto for private companies that choose to advertise in Spanish - last time I checked just because someone speaks Spanish (or Italian or German or Greek or Latin for that matter) doesn't make their money or their patronage worthless.

I don't think you understand what I'm getting at here. It's mainly for people who are angry about something or don't like or something and wanting to get it off their chest or rave about something they like and not so much a debating thread. I think people should assimilate to our culture and when companies do this it doen't help them. One of my exgirlfriends is Filipino she assimilated just fine and my ex wife is Thai and she assimilated just fine and they are both hear legally. They both new they needed to learn english and they did.

like I said, I can ask dris to create a category for that...

I will come right out and say it, politically correct or not. People who do not learn the language of the land are perceived as stupid and/or lazy. There is all the reason in the world to learn the language of the land you are in and no reason other than being stupid and/or lazy not to learn. Sorry if I offended any Hispanic people, which seems to be the largest culture/race that has little interest in learning English...but that is the hard truth.

People who move here from elsewhere should have at least a basic grasp of English within 6 months after arriving here...otherwise it is obvious they simply don't care. If they don't care then we should not be catering to them like we do. The same tax money would be better spent providing free language courses to the newly arrived than wasting money translating things into a dozen different languages.

We are becoming a Tower of Babel. The libs understand it is easier to control a nation divided than a nation united. I know that sounds very cynical but why else would the liberals be so against people in this country all being able to communicate easily through a common language?

Continuing to cater to people who cannot speak English is no different than continuing to give heroin to a junkie...ultimately it does not cure the problem.

Even the people who wrote the Bible understood that a group of people who cannot communicate amongst themselves will forever be disunited. Read the first paragraph about a united humanity. This unification applies to a united nation...ours. Does divide and conquer sound familiar?

I don't watch television so I don't have much to say. I have never seen a commercial in Spanish on an English speaking channel. What good would it do? Most of the people watching would be only English speaking.

If you are talking about the proliferation of "Spanish channels," in my area there are many on cable. I live in Southern California where there are a lot of Mexicans. When I was a kid there were NONE, now there must be at LEAST a half a dozen.

The broadcast seems to have a Spanish-speaking audience base large enough to support the programming....it's not like your tax dollars are paying for it.

I had a marketing professor who worked for a Spanish speaking station for a while. Supposedly there is quite a large market for it.

So what is your problem with it? You don't believe in a market economy?

ads are not the problem
the fact people can enter this country so easliy illegally and are even encouraged to is... start with the employers who violate existing laws and hire illegals

dont shoot the free market and entreperneurs taking advantage that they (and Spanish-speakers here legally) might be potential customers...

go back to the reason they are here. porous borders, no enforcement of existing laws, employers who continue not to adequate check backgrounds or worse yet knowlingly hire illegals.

the beauty of television eagle is a little thing called the remote and the ability to flip the station..... and in the age of tivo and DVR you dont have to sit through any commericals if you care not to anyway...

I totally agree. Eliminate the motiviation to come here.

I think I suggested a plan like that a while ago:

1) develop a fast, easy and reliable process to verify citizenship/eligibility to work for employers
2) Provide a streamlined path for citizenship for those who are here
3) only issue right to work authorizations at select entry points and no where else
4) once this is all up in running, drill any employer who employs directly or indirectly illegals. No hiding behind: "well our contract says that this sub is supposed to hire legal workers, so it's not our problem", guess what, it is your problem.

you will need draconian measures/penalties: fines of 5 x the BLS median annual wage for that kind of job per illegal for the 1st offense, 10 x for the second and jail for the 3rd.

no exemptions, no wiggle room - you roll the dice and if it comes up snake eyes, you lose and lose big.

So I guess we should make them nice and comfortable while they are here, and give them everything they want. Hell they are already taking over cities and towns creating there own little countries here. I suppose we should just stick our heads in the sand until it's too late or maybe it all ready is too late. And I'm not being racist I'm just being a concerned American.

Close but no cigar. The real reason they are here is that their government is so corrupt that it it discourages real business from investing capital in the country. It also discourages entrepreneurship when government officials have to be paid off. So long as the USA continues an unofficial open border policy, the people of Mexico will have no incentive to throw their corrupt government officials out on their asses and create a strong economy for themselves. Mexico is rich in natural resources and people to do the work...unfortunately their own government keeps them down.
