I started a thread the other day about a day at the races that got hi-jacked by some risk managers. So here's a thread just for them.
The leading cause of death amoung black youth is being killed by another black youth in a black neighborhood. Jesse and Al don't much get into that do they. How can that risk be minimized? My first thought is: If you are black, for God's sake, don't live in a black neighborhood. I know that will work because our subdivision has about a 50% black to white family ratio. Three families are actually exactly 50% black and white. In the year and a half that we've been here, no blacks have been killed. Does anyone have a different solution?
You're a racist pig for bringing up these facts.

It isn't always the case where blacks have a choice to leave their neighborhood/area. The areas you speak of are generally very very poor areas. Also, when people grow up in a certain culture, they tend to value that culture over others. In this case the blacks that live in these "high death rate areas" simply accept these killings as a fact of life...it's their culture so to speak. They don't leave the area because they are willing to "risk it"; Kind of the same way you risk your life everyday riding a mototcycle--what I believe to be high risk you view as acceptable risk.
So I don't see what your problem is.

Ok, you shot down my solution, now where's yours?

Any where's your solution, girlie? More Socio-babble about "black life styles"? What should I have expected?

I'll spell it out for you.. the solution is and has always been rooted in one simple word that is grossly undervalued in our society...
E-D-U-C-A-T-I-O-N.... from cradle to grave.
Knowledge is power.

hey Alex how is school going?
did you start your application process yet?
my daughter is looking at undergraduate programs already.. she may be graduating a year sooner then we thought...
she really wants to go to NYU but I'm not sure unless she gets a major academic scholorship we can pull off financing not the tuition but the living expenses in NYC....unless we move back there ourselves and start earning NYC salaries again..and cut out her rent or dorm expense.... we have saved plenty but tuition, room and board at NYU would run almost 60k a year... that's close to a quarter of a mil for a Bachelors... outrageous I think....
what law schools are you applying to?

what law schools are you applying to?
Reach Schools:
USC
UCLA
Realistic Schools:
Pepperdine
Loyola Law School (LMU)
University of San Diego
UC Hastings
Back-up Schools:
Santa Clara
Chapman Law
With the exception of UC Hastings and UCLA tuition will be about 35k a year. A place to live, a car and other expenses will probably run an additional 15-20k a year.
Many schools offer scholarship money. For instance, I could probably get close to a full ride at Chapman, but I would rather go to a better-known school.
I am staying in California no matter what so my options are limited.

I think I'll share this my neighbors Tony and Teresa. They moved in a couple months after we did to get away from the neighborhood where they lived because of the bad influences on their two kids. Teresa is a juvenile corrections officer and sees the kind of mess happening in "high death rate areas" all day long. I'm sure they'll be completely enthralled with your take on their culture, so to speak. Is this the kind of crap you liberals dish out to each other at cocktail parties?

VF Alex is no liberal.
He is very educated however.
He is probably more conservative then many on this board on many issues.

sounds great I wish you a lot of luck.
I am finding that the financial cut off rate for decent student loans and virtually ant financial aid is a lot lower then in was when I went to college...
her only hope at help is academic or swimming...we havent gotten any offers for swim scholarships yet but that will come closer to graduation... from what I hear they contact you not vs versa... I have no idea if the schools she is interested in have decent swim programs that offer scholarships
it is very complicated..

I don't feel like my comment was "liberal" or "leftist" in any way. Maybe it is just because you applauded that VF went on the attack.

I went to a State U. so I have never dealt with any debt before. My tuition is 1500 a semester plus books. On average my parents only had to lay out 4k a year.
I can't imagine the figures you are talking about for an undergraduate! The State U.'s in California are good deals, and if you are a serious student, you can get a decent education if you apply yourself.
Your discription of your daughter's intillect leads me to conclude that she needs to be among brighter students than what you would find at my University. I am like THE TOP DOG at my school...but I probably would have benefited if my peers were brighter.
You have to find a way to get her to the best place possible. Hopefully though loans if not through a scholarship.

California values education far more then Florida... tuition to universities were once totally free there... even now they are below the norm and considering the wages there it's probably easier for you and your parents...
several students from my daughters program each yeat go to Caltech (and MIT for that matter)... but although my daughter was once interested in engineering (she wanted to build rollar coasters)... she has actually become extremely interested in cinema and would like to direct and has her heart set on NYU Fsch school of the arts (where Martin Scorcese, Trentin Tarrintino and Spike Lee all went)... it is probalby the top film school in the country...
if she doesnt get in actually I think she is thinking about going to Florida state... which would be paid for 100% all expense in full because of the acadmic scholorship for her program... NYU would cost us alot more because of state tuition residency requirments... and especailly housing in Grenich Village..we will see...Quite a jump from NYU to Florida state... I think my husband and I will take her on a college tour and visit other campuses... private and state and see what else she may like... she is still exploring..
she has decided against Ivy league although she has the grades (she just near perfect score on a PSAT- perfect score on her fcat writing and reading last yesr too)).. ( I think this score is going to auto get her a National Merit Scholorship) . and has a 4.8 weighted GPA in high school... she doesnt want Ivy league or tech science school... def wants to go with drama/film... UCF here in Orlando I hear has a good film program (the Blair Witch Porject came out of it... I have to start researching.. a good good friend of mine useis the personsal assitant of a MAJOR (acadamy award winning even) movie star and fantastic actor.. he has offered to have my daughter meet with this movie star to discuss her future next time we are up in NY... maybe he will have some ideas for her...this actor has heard about her and agreed to meet her . actually saw one of her language projects and was impressed.. who knows... ,huh?
kinda scary for me film seems risky.. engineering a sure thing.. but it's her life and her dreams... and she is the gifted one so she has my support...
