Obama and his family got Secret Service Protection... today although they are saying there were no specific threats it seems the chatter enough was to warrant tax dollar paid service which is usually reserved to current or ex- executive branch eleted officials, thier spouses and thier minor children and the official nominees of the two major parties.
Obama is said to have requested it... is this a message that racism is still alive and well in this country or that Obama feels he should be afforded the same protection given to his major opponent (which she has only because of her first-lady history)??
This isn't unprecedented. Jesse Jackson also got early secret service protection when he was running for president... but that was in 1984 when the civil rights movement was in it's earlier years
What does it say that this is needed in the year 2007?
Does it say anything about the electability of an African-american president? If not for actual racist threats against him, the electorate feeling his vulnerability of assination could pose a threat to our nation?
What has Obama done to anyone accept being black that would cause someone wanting to assinate him? Mainstream on the right and left alike, seem to like him... this is alarming to say the least?

normally the secret service extends their protection to "major" candidates 120 days before an election.

What I find curious is that no Republican candidate has, publicly, received the same treatment...

Wrong mbossman.. Republican Allen Keyes , also black, got early secret service protection when running for POTUS
I imagine that they must get pretty numerous threats against all African American candiates for POTUS... to spend such resources on them.
Again what does that say about the racial state in our country???
Is Barak Obama more vulnerable to assanination then any of the other candidates from either side.. we dont know the intellegence but it is a legitimate question...
now who knows as polarzing as she is and the fact she is the first serious female candiate would they need to do the same thing for Hillary is she hadnt had it already??
Colin Powell admitted he passed a run for president becuase the sheer volume of threats against him made his wife talk him out of it...
It seems this problem crosses party lines..
This is a simple waste of money. IMO they shouldn’t provide any more protection for one candidate than they do for others. I’m sure nearly every candidate gets their share of threats; being more sensitive of these threats because of the race or sex of a candidate is ridiculous.

I meant in this case/this time frame.
as to Obama's likelihood of assissination due to race: no specific threat has been identified and even so, all it takes is 1 (one) wackjob to decide to kill someone and that could have triggered this protection. does that one threatening loonie toon make the entire/bulk/some of the country guilty of the same feelings/opinions/motivations that drive 1 single wackjob?
if you feel that it does, I need to whip the "stereotyping" label and place it firmly on your forehead.

From all I read, there's been no threat to Obama and he himself ASKED for the protection. It appears to be nothing more than his own insecurity.... whether merited or not is another question.

Here heyhey is again trying to drag up racism where it may or may not exist. All Presidential candidates whether they are black, white, yellow or Barny the purple dinosaur deserve Secret Service protection.
By the way, Obama is both black and white. His father was black and his mother was white. So to label Obama as black is misleading. In fact maybe people like heyhey should just leave the race label out of it...it's Irrelevant!
Try looking at the man and not the skin color heyhey.
