Personally, I think we should tell China to stick it where the sun don't shine and arm Taiwan ASAP.

The powers that be adore China for their perfect government. Therefore, we won't screw with them, regardless of if its right or not.

i think you are confusing the clinton presidency with the bush.
taiwan is much more important to us trade than china is, so just going on that, i would think the repubs would favor helping out taiwan. but who knows.
Taiwan 's days are numbered. China has large amounts of natural resources. They are about to put men in space - removing them from their third world status.
They have billions of smart people willing to work for pennies.
Our choice - friend or foe. I think it is possible to be friends because they are nice and honorable people. I know that we need to be ready if their leaders may not be the same.

unfortunetly, i think you're right bob. we let hong kong die, and now i think taiwan is next. The problem is: what are the Chinese's leader's intentions? Following Hong Kong, I think it's pretty clear that they don't intend to follow lazie fair. (I know two people in Hing Kong, and both have told me they don't voice their politicla thought anymore, out of fear) China follows the philosophy of Marx more than any other contry, even more than the USSr. (or at least they did back in the cold war; who knows what they believe now)
China, for all its resources and people, has a piece of shit economy. (I think they barely make the top 50, while Taiwan is the 7th largest, but my figures may be dated) Taiwan's economy, even though they are dwarfed by China's population and resources, is much stronger economicly since they have adherred to lazie faire much close. (not quite as much as Hong Kong, but close)
China reminds me of Russia in the 60's. Tons of growth, but only to the extent to bring them up to speed to feed and clothe themselves. After that, it just petered out.
As far as who lays claim to Taiwan, I think it's pretty clear that the Taiwanes government has more dibs on the island that China. After all, the people that founded tha government were pretty much run out of China.
In an admitadly faulty analogy, (just b/c I can't thik of a better one at the moment) China laying claim to Taiwan would be the equivalent of England laying claim to Argentina after seizing the Falklands.
I have over two dozen friends from China, and everyone of them hope that Taiwan remains independent.
Anyway, I think that our best course of action would be to ensure Taiwan's independence and to bring that country into the NAFTA fold.

Troy, I was being fecetious. And when I say "powers that be", I'm not talking about either administration. It is a movement. Communism did not die with the fall of the Soviet Union. It still has a grasp on Russia via the mafia (don't think for a second the Russian gov't is really running the show there). China is still Communist. I think there are people running things from above the fray. It would take me awhile to explain that one, though.
It will take someone who doesn't have Bob's philosophy of appeasement to keep a gov't such as China's in check.
And, Bob, the only reason China is able to do those things you mention is thru help or stolen information from other countries. Hell, Bill Clinton was their best friend in this regard.
