View Full Version : News: RNC asks to review 'The Reagans'
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Republican National Committee Friday asked CBS to allow a team of historians and friends of former President Ronald Reagan and his wife to review a miniseries about the couple before it airs.
Republicans have expressed concern that the miniseries, titled "The Reagans," may inaccurately portray the couple.
In a conference call with reporters, RNC Chairman Ed Gillespie said he sent the request to CBS Television President Leslie Moonves.
Gillespie said that if CBS denies the request, he will ask the network to run a note across the bottom of the screen every 10 minutes during the program's presentation informing viewers that the miniseries is not accurate

I don't really know what the big deal is about this movie. It could be accurate to the Nth degree or a complete fabrication I am not inclined to watch that for entertainment.

Newsweek is reporting that CBS may be looking to move this mini-series over to Showtime.
By moving over to Showtime (commerical "free" cable), the show will avoid any consumer boycott outrage.
Except they would get Showtime subscriber outrage like me who pay to see feature films on my premium station instead of this crap!!!

far fewer of you than there is the general public. Besides, the normal program choice would have been "the Adventures of Buckeroo Bonzai" (for the 25th time this month)
It is telling that the righties can have such a strong opinion on something that is not finished and they have not seen yet. ;)

Good point, mboss.
I don't know why anybody would be suprised by this. The production staff of this thing is comprised of hard lefties. Not suprising from CBS.

CBS has pulled the plug. The mini-series will be moved from CBS primetime to Showtime - a HUGE drop in market penetration.

I still don't see whats so great about Reagan that they'd want to do a series on him. I'd think doing a series on Clinton would be more entertaining.
WindeC. Anyone can download porn off the internet to see Clinton. I will agree that watching a miniseries about Reagan is a snooze yawner. That's what documentaries are all about.

Perhaps you've been buried under schoolwork James, and missed all the hubbub. It wasn't seen as a series on Reagan, but rather a leftist distortion showing him as almost a cartoon character.
One major objection was the portrayal of him as homophobic and reporting him as saying something along the lines of, "I'm not going to fund aids research. Who gives a damn about gays?" A complete falacy.
Your parallel to Clinton would have him saying, "I'm not going into Rawanda. Who gives a damn about blacks?" Another falacy. Can you imagine the uproar?
The bottom line is it's unamerican to pick on a still living person too sickly to even defend himself. I seriously doubt if it will even be on Showtime.
Maybe in the future .....

I don't know if I'd classify it as un-American. Just stupid, and kinda cruel.

Typical left-winger - to blame it on censorship. This is not censorship but free speech at its finest. Free speech does not mean we have to listen to everybody else. It means that we have the freedom to bitch. Well, the people bitched, and they spoke with their pocket book. CBS is a business. This is a perfect example of free speech.
And there was a big difference, IMO, between this and the Bill Maher thing. Maher got cooked because of one statement he said. I dont like it when that happens. You lefties have fried many a conservative based on that logic, and when it happens to one of you guys you cry censorship. I disagree with the Maher thing. But, with CBS, we're talking about a huge corporation investing money into making a very biased movie and broadcasting it on the public airwaves. The people have every right to complain and vote with their wallets.

I'm waiting for the Clinton film. Starring Ron Jeremy as Bill and Mary Carey as Hillary. Scene 2 - Bill mistakes Hillary's tits for her legs.... too funny! :D :D

I actually disagree, this is definately intimidation. This proposed boycott would only serve to increase ratings so I don't think they were scared for there pocketbooks. CBS on the other hand has to deal with the FCC which can make there life difficult. Currently the FCC is led by Colin Powell's son, AKA republicans. If this were not the case CBS would have run the show as is and enjoyed the increased publicity made by these attempted boycotts.

Hehe....give me a break. Is another one of those smoke-filled room conspiracies? Jeez....
The boycott might help ratings, but CBS doesn't care about that if no companies are willing to advertise on the show for fear of wasting their money or being boycotted themselves. Plus, CBS has some tatters of a reputation left, and putting out this film will just worsen it for them.
Its not intimidation. Its the people speaking up against it. If this were the government telling CBS they can't run it, then you'd have a point.

As I understand it, the FCC has jurisdiction over individual stations, not networks themselves (with the exception of the O&O's [network owned and operated stations]).
What's the FCC going to do? pull the license of every, individually licensed network affiliate?

Ah ok, Wheels, I had no idea really what it was about. I just heard a few headlines. Thanks for the update.
The FCC has plenty of power over the networks as well as Viacom. ;)
drisley

No, bob. The FCC has power over licenses, which are only issued to individual stations. CBS is a network and is not licensed by the FCC.
The FCC has power to approve or disapprove mergers and acquiring more networks. Viacom was scared that they would get fucked. The individual network is a small player in this game.

True, the FCC does have power over that, and CBS and Viacom are looking into a merger. But, the rest of your post is nothing but conjecture and you know it.
Conjecture?
Catch up.

Conjecture: "Viacom was scared that they would get fucked."
I stand by it because I just happen to know a little more on this subject than you need to know. ;)
So the lesson learned is tell the truth and you won't have to worry about the GOP or it's influences.

I am not saying that the FCC called CBS and said don't air that. It is not a conspiracy in that sense. I am just saying the reason they pulled it is not because of a threatened boycott. All boycotts do is add audiences to shows. They were worried about acquiring more radio stations and local stations which require licenses from the FCC, which is republican run at the time. They are worried about their business model.
I don't know if it's just political posturing or what, but I haven't heard a single news reports/show host no matter how liberal or conservative, agree with the producers of the movie. The only support they seem to have are democratic strategists and consultants.
